16 December is the victory day (bijoy dibos) in Bangladesh. Here ‘victory’ means ‘bijoy’ and ‘day’ means ‘dibos’. Bangladesh got independence in 1971. Every year Bangladesh celebrates the victory day in 16 December. The people of Bangladesh enjoy the day with parades, sports, recitations, concerts, and paying respect to the martyrs. Victory day is a national holiday in Bangladesh. There is a national memorial at Savar, 35 km away from capital city Dhaka. It is called National Martyrs Memorial (Jatiya Smriti Saudha, জাতীয় স্মৃতি সৌধ). The National Martyrs Memorial is the national monument in Bangladesh. It was designed by Syed Mainul Hossain. In 16 December 1982 the monument was inaugurated. The monument is 150 feet long (46 metre). The architecture is composed of seven pairs triangular. Everyday people visit the monument. The monument is open for all. The seven pairs are related with the history of Bangladesh liberation. In 16 December people of all classes and occupations gather at the national memorial to pay respect to the martyrs. In 1971 the Pakistani forces surrendered to Bangladesh. Bangladesh got independence from Pakistan. There was a birth of a country named Bangladesh from East Pakistan. India also celebrates the day as Vijay Diwas. In 1947 India divided in two countries- India and Pakistan. Pakistan had two parts- the East Pakistan and the West Pakistan. There was about 1400 km distance between the Pakistans. 1971 is important in the world history. Pakistani Army Arrested Sheikh Mujibur Rahman the leader of Bangladesh and sent to West Pakistan. He returned in Bangladesh in 1972. The people of Bangladesh got a map, a country, a flag, a nation, a flower. Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is booming up day by day.
